Apple Silicon represents the Mac’s transition from Intel x86 processors to custom, ARM-based SoCs (System on a Chip), a move announced in 2020 and completed in 2023. This architecture, exemplified by the M-series chips (M1, M2, M3, M4), integrates the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and other controllers onto a single die. The design utilizes a Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) for low-latency data access across all components. This vertical integration provides a massive leap in performance and power efficiency: the M1 chip, for instance, featured 16 billion transistors and delivered up to 3.5x faster CPU performance than previous-generation Macs, enabling significantly longer battery life.
