The EU AI Act is the world's first comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence, establishing a risk-based compliance structure across all member states.

This regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) establishes a tiered, risk-based system for AI governance: unacceptable-risk systems (e.g., social scoring, manipulative techniques) are banned immediately; high-risk systems (e.g., those used in employment, law enforcement, or critical infrastructure) face strict requirements for data quality, human oversight, and technical documentation.
