systemd

The standard system and service manager for Linux, running as PID 1 to bootstrap user space and manage system processes.

As the default init system for major Linux distributions, systemd acts as the primary orchestrator of the operating system (running as PID 1). It replaces legacy SysV init scripts with a declarative unit-file configuration model, offering aggressive parallelization during boot via socket and D-Bus activation. Beyond process supervision, systemd unifies core OS components by managing device nodes (udev), logging (journald), network configuration (networkd), and user sessions (logind). It leverages modern Linux kernel features like control groups (cgroups v2) to isolate, track, and limit resource consumption for every managed service.
