X (formerly Twitter) is the global, real-time microblogging service: Users broadcast short, 280-character posts (tweets) to an audience of hundreds of millions.

X (formerly Twitter), founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams, operates as a premier microblogging and social networking service. The platform's core utility is the immediate, global dissemination of information: users post 'tweets' (short posts, historically limited to 280 characters) containing text, images, and video. The service scaled rapidly, reporting over 330 million monthly active users by 2019 and serving as a critical tool for real-time communication and activism (e.g., its role in political movements). Post-acquisition by Elon Musk in October 2022, the company rebranded to X, expanding its feature set to include long-form content and audio-video calls, solidifying its position as one of the world's most-visited websites.
